Es hat in den letzten Monaten etliche Entwicklungen gegeben. Außer meinen Künstlerbüchern, die meine Hauptarbeit darstellen, gibt es etwas Neues: die erste Studie.
Wer ist Johann Diederich Gries?
…fragt wohl mancher, der Anfang September 2024 eine Rundmail von mir bekommen hat. Der Goethezeit-Übersetzer (1775 — 1842) hat fast alle großen Namen seiner Zeit gekannt, erscheint aber sonst fast nur als Fußnote. Johannes Saltzwedel hat eine Chronik seines Lebens geschrieben; das Buch, das Sie auf ► dieser Seite näher betrachten können, ist jetzt erschienen. Zum 250. Geburtstag hat Johannes Saltzwedel einen Festvortrag in der Hamburger Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek gehalten, der gut besucht war. Das Buch ist jetzt offiziell und in allen Buchhandlungen bestellbar! Allerdings geht es immer wesentlich schneller auf den direkten Weg zur Hirundo Press.
BBK-Jahresausstellung VOR MEINER TÜR
Am 14. Februar begann die Ausstellung VOR MEINER TÜR im Hamburger Kunsthaus, und mein Leporello KING COAL ist dabei. Am 23. März findet eine Finissage statt. Alle Freunde in Hamburg sind herzlich willkommen!
Tag der Druckkunst
Am 15. März fand der TAG DER DRUCKKUNST statt. Ich habe wie im vergangenen Jahr eine Vorführung an der großen Werkmeister-Radierpresse im 1. Stock des Museums der Arbeit gemacht, wieder mit meiner besonderen Dreifarben-Technik, die wie Zauberei aussieht!

BuchDruckKunst
4. – 6.4.2025
Die nächste Messe, die 20. BuchDruckKunst, findet Anfang April 2025 in Hamburg statt. Eine Einladung ist gerade an die Empfänger meines Rundbriefes geschickt worden! Die Hirundo Press ist auch Teilnehmer an den Europäischen Tagen der Angewandten Kunst (ETAK), die ebenfalls an diesem Wochenende geplant sind. Siehe auch die Kalender-Seite.
Querschnitt durch die Schwarze Kunst
Während der erzwungenen Einsiedelei im Sommer 2020 habe ich die Druckerei des Museums der Arbeit in Messinglinien und Bleisatz nachgebaut. In diesem Museum bin ich seit fünfundzwanzig Jahren tätig. Hier geht es um die Schwarze Kunst in ihrer lebendigen Essenz! Entstanden ist ein kleines Buch, das auf dem Original Heidelberger Zylinder (OHZ) gedruckt wurde und in zwei Formaten erscheint; es führt auf transparenten Blättern vorbei an den verschiedenen Maschinen, die hier immer noch zum Einsatz kommen, darunter auch der OHZ!

Das jüngste Buch: KING COAL (2023)
Wie so häufig dauert es bei mir, bis ein Buch fertig wird. Die Recherche, die Planung, das Experimentieren hat alles hinausgezögert, aber jetzt ist es soweit. Es geht um die Steinkohle! Ein Element, ein Faszinosum, eine Sozialgeschichte (mit eigener Sprache, genau wie im Drucker- und Setzerbereich). Die Steinkohle ist natürlich inzwischen »umstritten«. Wie paßt das alles in die Kunst? Mehr erfahren Sie auf der dafür eingerichteten ► Seite.
Immerhin regt dieses Buch großes Interesse an; einige Exemplare sind schon verkauft, unter anderem an die British Library und Stanford University. Eins von den insgesamt zehn Exemplaren wurde im Sommer auf der 3. Biennale der Arbeitsgemeinschaft des Kunsthandwerks (AdK) ausgestellt und jetzt auch in der Jahresausstellung des Hamburger BBK.
Die Kleine Reihe
Es gibt immer noch Exemplare von allen Büchern aus der »Kleinen Reihe«, obwohl das erste fast ausverkauft ist! Auf Martin Mosebachs »Das Land der Dichtung« (2012) und Robert Crawfords »FIRE« (2017) folgte 2018 »Grotesken von Sabbioneta«. Dieses letzte Projekt war in verschiedener Hinsicht bemerkenswert und hat viele Bewunderer gefunden.

Welcome to the Hirundo Press’s electronic news pages! After a lot of experimentation, common sense has prevailed: German and English are now combined on one website. On most pages an English text can be clicked open alongside or below the German one. This makes it a lot simpler for all readers, including the webmaster (Penelope sends greetings, as ever).
2025: over 25 years of Hirundo Press!
The Hirundo Press began in 1998 with a collaboration with Robert Crawford, Impossibility, and has not looked back since then.
The latest book: KING COAL (2023)
As so often with me, a new book takes time to mature. The research and planning that went into it, all the experimentation, meant that it took longer than expected. But now it has seen the light of day. Appropriately, the topic is coal! An element, an object of desire, a social history (with its own idiom, just as in the world of printing and typesetting). Coal is of course now a »controversial« topic. What does that have to do with art? Some answers can be found here, and the image above is part of it. There is now a dedicated ► page about the book.
It was an honour for me that this book, of which there are only ten copies, has been acquired by among others Stanford University and the British Library. In 2024 one copy was exhibited in a biennial Arts&Crafts show in Hamburg and this year it is being shown in the annual exhibition of the Hamburg Artists Association (BBK).
2020: Querschnitt durch die Schwarze Kunst
This was a departure from my norm so far, the fruit of a project undertaken in 2020 in the Museum of Work in Hamburg, during the enforced isolation of the spring and summer. This is a celebration of the printing arts, called in German »die Schwarze Kunst« (the Black Art), a fine play on words, as the title derives partly from printing ink itself, but also from the threat posed by Gutenberg’s revolutionary invention in the 15th century, especially to the Church! The book can be viewed on ►this page. A clothbound case for the special edition of 10 copies was crafted by Thomas Zwang in Hamburg in late 2020.
There was a small advertisement in the 2021/01 issue of Printmaking Today and in 2021 a long article on the Hirundo Press at 25 in Parenthesis. Moreover, a short piece appeared in the Book Arts Newsletter, which showed two images also viewable on the book’s dedicated ► page.
And otherwise…
The ► book before this was a poem in German by Tobias Roth on the ideal Renaissance city of Sabbioneta. This time the book was conceived with colour woodcuts throughout, featuring two spreads where the pages fold out to double size. It appeared on June 24, 2018, and the book was well received at the inaugural reading. If you are a bookbinder and would like a loose-leaf version for binding, please contact me; I still have one or two.
